Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of Monday night’s 23-17 loss to the San Franciso 49ers that “could be significant,” according to coach Dan Quinn.
McLaurin will undergo more testing Tuesday to determine the severity of the injury.
“There’s fear,” Quinn said of what the results might show.
McLaurin was carted off the field with an air cast on his left knee after he attempted to cut sharply to the outside while running a route on third-and-9 with 2:16 left in the quarter. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was sacked on the play.
“He’s a brother to me. It sucks,” Daniels said. “You see how hard he works … Praying for Terry. He’s been there for me through a lot since I came into this league, the adverse times I went through last year and so far this year, and he’s been right by my side. I love Terry and appreciate him a lot.”
McLaurin caught a 27-yard pass on the Commanders’ first drive, leading to a field goal. He is second on the team in receptions with 15 and has a team-high 230 yards receiving, with one touchdown, ESPN reported.
McLaurin, 31, sat out Washington’s Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts after injuring a hamstring two days earlier, but he returned the following week.
He sat out seven games in 2025, ending a streak of 72 consecutive games played. Before last season, he had been a consistent producer, with five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, from 2020 to 2024.
The Commanders also lost defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to a knee injury late in the first half, and he was ruled out for the game.
McLaurin signed a three-year contract extension prior to last season. He’ll count $34 million against the salary cap in 2027 and $39.5 million in 2028. The Commanders could either restructure his contract after this season or release him with $25.5 million in dead cap room.
