Steelers add RB Rico Dowdle on a 2 year deal

RB Rico Dowdle with the Carolina Panthers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are turning to a new option at running back, signing former Carolina Panthers standout Rico Dowdle, YankeeSports reports

NFL Network reported Monday that the deal is for two years and worth $12.25 million.

Dowdle’s breakout stretch

Dowdle led Carolina with 1,076 rushing yards in 2025, marking his second straight 1,000-yard season after doing so with Dallas. When Chuba Hubbard missed Weeks 5 and 6, Dowdle erupted for 473 scrimmage yards over two games, breaking Christian McCaffrey’s franchise record. Coach Dave Canales praised his “violent” running style and elevated him to starter.

Key performances and late-season dip

Dowdle’s physicality showed in a midseason win at Green Bay, where he rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns. However, his production dipped late, with only 28 carries for 88 yards over the final three games. He expressed frustration afterward and made clear he would test free agency.

Career path

Undrafted out of South Carolina, Dowdle signed with Dallas and spent four seasons there before becoming the starter in 2024. His move to Carolina last year gave him the chance to prove himself as a lead back, and now Pittsburgh is banking on his power running to reshape its offense.

Steelers’ roster shift

The signing comes after Kenneth Gainwell, the Steelers’ team MVP last season, agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with Tampa Bay. Gainwell was prolific in the passing game, leading Pittsburgh in receptions. Dowdle, by contrast, is a more traditional runner. He joins Jaylen Warren and 2025 third-round pick Kaleb Johnson in the backfield.

Looking ahead

Pittsburgh’s decision to add Dowdle reflects a shift toward a more physical ground attack. While he won’t replicate Gainwell’s versatility, his downhill style could provide balance and toughness as the Steelers aim to stay competitive in the AFC North.
