Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says Bruno Fernandes is “fully committed” to the club and will remain captain.
Fernandes was relegated to the bench for Sunday’s 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth after the Portuguese questioned the tactics used in a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.
Bournemouth’s win has cast doubt on Carrick’s future but the 45-year-old will remain in charge for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
Whether Fernandes will return to the starting line-up remains to be seen but the pair had clear-the-air talks at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday in a bid to move forward.
There is ‘no decision to be made’ on Fernandes’ captaincy says Carrick, per BBC Sport.
“We are clear with the situation of the team, and as a football club,” said Carrick.
“He [Fernandes] is an important player for this group. He has been and he will be.
“We’ve got to make a difference and we’ve got to push things in a good direction.
“He’s fully committed to this football club; he’s fully committed to making things better. There are absolutely no issues with that.
“It doesn’t change for me. It was a decision for what we felt for the [Bournemouth] game. That’s it.
“He’s the one that’s led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he’ll continue to do that. There are absolutely no issues with that.”
Fernandes Slammed for Questioning Michael Carrick’s Tactics After Como Defeat
Yankeescores reported that Former England international Joe Cole was not having it over the manner Manchester United players criticise the club in the press.
Cole described Fernandes’ questioning of Carrick’s tactics as “sacrilege” after the United captain slammed the technical crew over a lack of pressing in their 4-1 defeat to Como in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
This comes on the heels of Lisandro Martinez slamming the United hierarchy over a lack of quality signings during the summer transfer window.
