Barcelona have launched a formal complaint against the officiating in their 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid; Yankee Scores brings you the full details

Barcelona petitioned Uefa regarding what they refer to as a ‘grave lack of VAR intervention’ in their defeat to Atletico.

In the 54th minute during the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final match, Barcelona felt they deserved a penalty call against the visitors’ defender Marc Pubill. Pubill had previously earned a yellow card. Pubill had stopped the ball with his hand after goalkeeper Juan Musso had seemingly called for a goal kick restart.

However, no spot-kick was called by referee Istvan Kovacs. Barcelona players pleaded and no VAR intervention from Christian Dingert. Barcelona “considers that the refereeing did not conform to the current law, directly influencing how the result.

Barca Demand Access to Referee Communications

FC Barcelona understands that this decision, along with a grave lack of intervention by VAR, represents a major error.

Accordingly, the club has requested access to refereeing communications, and where applicable, official acknowledgment of the errors. Also, the adoption of the relevant measures.

Atletico had taken a lead at this point courtesy of Alvaraz’s free-kick in reply to their opponent’s 10 men. Earlier, Cubarsi had earned a red card after initially being shown a yellow for fouling Simeone.

“The VAR was very focused today for Atletico,” Barca boss Flick said after the game.

“I don’t know what happens in the situation where the goalkeeper starts the game and the defender stops it with the hand and then plays again. For me it is a clear red card – well a double yellow – and then a red card and penalty.”

Sorloth added a second in the 70th minute to give Atletico their first win at the Nou Camp since 2006.
