Kylian Mbappe has made history after becoming the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice when he scooped the award for top scorer at the 2026 tournament, Yankee Scores reports.
The France forward scored 10 goals in eight games to edge out the Lionel Messi in a quality race.
Mbappe scored eight times to finish top scorer at Qatar 2022, winning the Golden Boot in back-to-back World Cups.
The 27-year-old was the first man to hit double figures for World Cup goals since Gerd Muller for West Germany in 1970.
Only Just Fontaine, who scored 13 for France in 1958, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis, who scored 11 in 1954, have scored more individual goals in a single tournament, per BBC Sport.
Mbappe is also the all-time leading scorer in the men’s World Cup with 22 goals – one more than Messi.
He could not stop France going down 6-4 to England and finishing fourth but he got the better of the Argentine on Saturday with two goals in the bronze match.
Mbappe scored twice against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage and Sweden in the last 32 as well.
He then scored against Paraguay in the last 16 – the winner from the spot in the 70th minute – and Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Messi could have passed Real Madrid’s striker with a hat-trick in Sunday’s World Cup final.
However, the 39-year-old failed to find the net in New Jersey as his Argentina side lost 1-0 to Spain and ended the tournament with eight goals from as many matches.
