The Incident
The incident happened earlier this month left him with a concussion and a string of broken bones
The 49ers said Saturday that their head coach was in a two-vehicle accident July 14 near his house in Palo Alto.
General manager John Lynch told reporters Shanahan has a concussion, a fractured nose, three broken ribs and a hand injury.
He also has more than 40 stitches in his face.
Palo Alto police said neither motorist seemed to be under the influence, and no citations were written. The other driver did not go to the hospital.
“Physically, he’s doing better but he’s still got some symptoms from the concussion and he’s not cleared for full duty,” Lynch said.
What happens next
In the interim, the head coach’s workload will be handled by assistant head coach Chris Foerster, and the team’s coordinators will also be chipping in.
“We’re not going to blink. We feel like we’re pretty well prepared for something like this.”
Lynch dismissed any concern, per ESPN, about Shanahan missing real time once the season gets under way, saying doctors have not indicated that’s a risk.
New season
The 49ers open their regular season on Sept. 10 against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
Shanahan will be in his 10th season coaching the 49ers.
He ties Bill Walsh for the longest coaching tenure in franchise history.
He’s 82-67 in the regular season with two Super Bowl trips.
He needs 11 more wins this year to overtake Walsh for second on the franchise’s all-time list.
