Real Madrid were trailing Roma 3–1 in the 83rd minute, but substitutes Carlos Espí and Endrick made it 3–3 before Antonio Rüdiger produced the magic moment from close range in the 90th minute.
Mourinho’s changes made the difference. Roma couldn’t deal with the corners from another substitute, Arda Güler, and they crumbled late on.
Espi scored five minutes after coming on, converting a rebound after Endrick’s header had been parried. Endrick then headed in from a Güler corner, and Rüdiger steered in another Güler set piece with a close-range volley. It was a remarkable finish to a thrilling match.
Things looked very different early on. The hosts took a deserved lead in the 20th minute when Marten de Roon hit a first-time 20-yard shot from Matías Soulé’s pass. But Real were only behind for five minutes. Kylian Mbappé, playing his 100th Champions League game, saw his strike take a deflection off Gianluca Mancini, loop up and over goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, and become his 72nd goal in the competition.
