BYU’s Scoring Leader

AJ Dybantsa led the nation in scoring last season, carrying BYU into the NCAA tournament after teammate Richie Saunders suffered a season‑ending injury. His dominance on the court solidified his reputation as the draft’s premier prospect, making him a household name among NBA scouts and fans.

Questions around when AJ Dybantsa would declare for the draft have been on the minds of NBA fans. But according to him, the decision ultimately rests with his mother, and he’s fully at peace with that.

A Childhood Dream Realized

On Thursday, Dybantsa announced via YouTube that he will enter the 2026 NBA Draft. In a heartfelt video, he read a letter he wrote at age seven, reflecting on his dream of becoming a professional player. Now, he stands as the projected No. 1 pick, with Kansas standout Darryn Peterson expected to challenge him for the top spot.

Balancing Education and Basketball

Despite declaring for the draft, Dybantsa emphasized his commitment to education. He plans to finish his college degree online, honoring his mother’s wishes. Speaking in his hometown of Brockton, Massachusetts, he highlighted the importance of education for everyone, not just athletes or celebrities.

Hometown Pride

Dybantsa expressed his desire to represent Brockton with the same pride as boxing legends Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler. He acknowledged that the real journey begins once he enters the NBA, and he looks forward to embracing the challenges of being a rookie.

Draft Night Awaits

The Utah Jazz could secure the No. 1 pick, potentially keeping Dybantsa close to his college roots in Provo. However, he made clear that he has no preferred destination, stating he’s ready to give his all to whichever team drafts him.
