England defender Jarell Quansah will miss two matches after being sent off against Mexico, Yankee Scores reports.
Quansah was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Jesus Gallardo in the 54th minute of the 3-2 win.
The Bayer Leverkusen player was also given an extra match in addition to the one-game automatic ban, as it was deemed serious foul play by Fifa’s disciplinary committee.
Former Liverpool man Quansah will miss Saturday’s quarter-final with Norway (22:00 BST) and possible semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland.
Quansah, 23, will be available if England reach the final in New Jersey on July 19.
The Football Association were considering an appeal but there is no right of appeal against the suspension under tournament rules, per BBC Sport.
The sanction also underscores an inconsistency with the way United States forward Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension was overturned.
Striker Balogun was red-carded for serious foul play against Bosnia-Herzegovina and also should have been banned for two matches.
The 25-year-old was due to miss his side’s last-16 clash with Belgium, but Fifa stunned everyone by handing him a one-match ban, suspended for 12 months.
US President Donald Trump confirmed he called Fifa president Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of that red card.
Fifa said in an 871-word statement on the Balogun situation that it had taken the decision “having regard to all the specific circumstances surrounding the incident and evidence available” without explaining what had been considered.
This has led to a backlash across the game, including from UEFA and Belgium and England boss Thomas Tuchel.
That led to France appealing against Michael Olise’s yellow card in their win over Paraguay, which was rejected by Fifa.
