Real Madrid have appointed Jose Mourinho as manager on a three-year deal.
Unveiling After Elections
Official unveiling as Real’s new manager will take place after the club’s presidential elections 7th June.
At 63, Mourinho leaves Benfica, a club which he joined in September and which managed to finish the Primeira Liga season in third place under his leadership. Mourinho, however, guided the Portuguese giants to an unbeaten run in the league.
As one of the most successful coaches in recent times, Mourinho won La Liga, Copa Del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup in his first spell at Real between 2010 and 2013.
Mourinho will replace caretaker coach Alvaro Arbeloa as the official manager of Los Blancos.
Reviving a Fallen Giant
Since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid have endured back-to-back trophyless seasons.
Their biggest rival, Barcelona have won the league at their expense for the past two seasons.
Real Madrid lost its chances of lifting the Champions League trophy after being eliminated in the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich (aggregate score of 6-4).
The Nomadic Mourinho
Returning to England after leaving Real Madrid in 2013, Mourinho won his third league trophy in the English football with Chelsea, winning also the EFL Cup in the 2014-15 season.
In 2015, after his mutual departure with Chelsea, Mourinho coached Manchester United on a three-year deal
After winning Europa League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield in his debut season at Old Trafford, Mourinho was sacked in December 2018 due to some bad results.
Since then Mourinho has managed Spurs and Roma in Serie A, winning the Europa Conference League in 2022. His last destination before Benfica move was in Turkey where he coached Fenerbahce but couldn’t unseat Galatasaray as league champions.
