Calum McFarlane is back at Chelsea as an interim manager for the second time; an indication on how Chelsea depend on him during difficult times. Yankee Scores examines McFarlane’s impact on Chelsea’s tactics and his potential challenges during his second stint as an emergency manager.

Tactical Masterclass: Matching the Best

The former Chelsea striker was impressive during his first emergency tenure on January 2, 2026. McFarlane oversaw a gutsy 1-1 stalemate against Manchester City, with a switch at halftime to a high pressing back-three formation that threw off Manchester City and allowed the late 94th-minute equalizer from Enzo Fernández. That move demonstrated McFarlane’s tactical acumen as Chelsea head coach.

The Youth Bridge: From U21s to the First Team

He horned his coaching skills with Chelsea’s youth teams. After quitting Southampton in July 2025, McFarlane did well with Chelsea’s Under-21 team and also led the club’s Under-19 team in a challenging UEFA Youth League competition. His relationship with young players, such as Andrey Santos and Josh Acheampong, has enabled Chelsea’s incorporation of youth into a first team that has been misfiring all season.

The Final Audition: A Quest for European Football

Instilling confidence back into the players won’t be an easy task for a team that has lost 5 consecutive games without scoring. Chelsea sits eighth in the table and will play Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final this Sunday. The next 4 league games for Chelsea are against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Tottenham, and, lastly, Sunderland. The season is ending with challenging fixtures. McFarlane’s second temporary managerial spell requires far more than keeping things afloat until the next permanent head coach arrives. Most importantly, McFarlane needs to secure European football despite a season of turmoil and upheaval. With seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool, Champions League football seems far-fetched. But Europa League qualification may be achievable. With two points separating the Blues from fifth-placed Brighton, the Europa or Conference League may suffice.
