Giannis Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee is no longer certain, and whispers of New York have added fuel to the fire. The Bucks’ superstar has made it clear that only one team outside Wisconsin could tempt him. Yankee Scores reports.

A Meeting in Greece

According to Shams Charania and ESPN, Giannis met with Bucks officials in his native Greece last July. That meeting shifted the conversation dramatically: “the New York Knicks became the only team he’d play for other than Milwaukee.” Despite the Bucks refusing to move him, Giannis initially agreed to give the new roster a chance to grow.

However, that pledge didn’t last. Early season struggles, including losses to Washington and Brooklyn, reopened old wounds. By December, Giannis and his agent Alex Saratsis reignited trade talks, signaling his patience was wearing thin.

Cracks in the Relationship

The Bucks’ campaign collapsed. ESPN reported that Giannis clashed with management over requests to shut down for injury recovery. His response was blunt: “For somebody to come and tell me not to play or compete, it’s like a slap in my face,” he told reporters on April 3.

That quote underscored the disconnect, a player unwilling to sit, and a franchise unwilling to bend. By late March, Milwaukee was eliminated from playoff contention, finishing near the bottom in both offensive and defensive rankings.

What Lies Ahead

Giannis is under contract for one more season and eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in October. Yet ownership has accepted that a trade may be inevitable. The Knicks, long searching for a marquee star, now stand as the only team he’d consider outside Milwaukee.

As one Bucks source told ESPN, “They waited until the very end on Giannis, and now everyone knows.”
