Chiefs coach Andy Reid said on Friday that it is unlikely Patrick Mahomes would participate in the team’s preseason opener next week against the Los Angeles Rams.
“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him against the Rams,” Reid said, according to ESPN. “Percentages are leaning that way.”

Mahomes is still recovering from the torn ACL and LCL he sustained in the final minutes of Kansas City’s Week 15 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers, a loss that knocked the Chiefs out of playoff contention.
He had surgery the day after the injury and has been working through an intense rehab ever since, with rumors of offseason training lasting as long as seven hours a day.
But Mahomes has been cleared for full participation since the first day of training camp and has participated in padded practices, including 11-on-11 work
Reid stressed his caution is about controlling the workload, not any new concerns regarding the knee.
The coach also left the door open on sitting Mahomes out further, saying he hasn’t determined if his quarterback would play in the second or third preseason games either, adding that backups like Justin Fields, youngster Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun need the reps.
