Running back Breece Hall suffered a groin strain in New York Jets practice on Monday and will undergo imaging to assess the severity of his injury, which could be a big hit to their run-oriented attack.
Aaron Glenn’s Reaction
Coach Aaron Glenn, speaking immediately after practice, noted that initial signs don’t appear to be grave.
“I don’t think it was a big deal, but I want to make sure I get the evaluation on that,” he said.
Hall hurt himself on the grass field not being touched by anyone. Hall received a swing pass in the red zone and was running towards the apparent touchdown, but then he dropped down to one knee a few yards away from the end zone. Hall hobbled to the sidelines and was evaluated in the medical tent before going to the locker room.
“My stomach kind of dropped a little bit,” Allen, who is the second running back, said. “But from the sounds of it, it doesn’t seem too serious. So hopefully he can get back as soon as possible.”
The Jets start the new season in 27 days playing the Tennessee Titans.
Hall is probably the most important player on the Jets offense. The Jets used their franchise tag on Hall this offseason before giving him a three-year, $43.5 million contract in May. At that point in time, Hall became the fourth-most highly paid running back. Now, Hall is in eighth place according to annual average salary.
Backfield Depth
Hall, who is 25 years old, ran for 1,065 yards last season. New offensive coordinator Frank Reich expressed his desire to rely more on the rushing game, especially when it comes to Hall.
Jets’ backfield depth will be tested for the remaining training camp and possibly longer. Isaiah Davis, who is their third running back, missed a week due to a minor knee injury. He is expected to miss at least one more week.
Now Hall, Allen, and Kene Nwangwu are their top backs. Behind them they have two rookie free agents — Chip Trayanum and Sam Scott. Most likely, they will try to find a veteran running back.
