Australia equalised after Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany put the ball into his own net following a dangerous free-kick in the 55th minute.
There were opportunities at both ends but neither side could find a winner with Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach pulling out a remarkable stop late on to deny Ramy Rabia a potential winner, sending the match into extra time, per ESPN.
Mohamed Salah of Egypt, who had shaken off a hamstring problem to play, sparked into action in extra time but the teams were all square after 120 minutes
Egypt went into the shootout with a terrible record having lost their last four shootouts and this worry was heightened when Mat Ryan replaced Beach in goal for Australia in the 119th minute. But Ryan was unable to save any of Egypt’s penalties.
Salah comfortably slotted his shot down the middle and Egypt then scored four penalties in a row.
Australia’s hopes were dashed as defenders Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to hit the target, giving Egypt a 4-2 shootout victory.
The victory propels Egypt to the Round of 16 where they will meet the winner of the Argentina vs Cape Verde contest.
Australia’s loss ends their tournament run in Dallas and continues their wait for a maiden World Cup knockout win.
