Morocco came back from behind to beat the Netherlands on penalties to progress to the last 16, Yankee Scores reports.

Morocco were the better side for long spells but found Bart Verbruggen in inspired form in goal and also hit the crossbar before Gakpo – who announced the loss of his unborn son on Saturday – smashed home 18 minutes from time after a lightning fast break.

But a grandstand finish saw Issa Diop thump home a stoppage time header to take the game into extra time and then penalties.

The Dutch missed three of their penalties and Ismail Saibari struck to secure a 3-2 victory that set up a date with Canada in Houston on Saturday (18:00 BST).

Koeman’s Emergency Back-Five Shift

Liverpool forward Gakpo stayed with the squad despite his mourning, starting for the Dutch as coach Ronald Koeman went for a back five for the first time in 32 games.

The opening stages were tense and physical, with running battles between Ismail Saibari and Jan Paul van Hecke at one end and Brian Brobbey and Chadi Riad at the other, the latter needing a new shirt after one tussle with the Netherlands and Sunderland striker.

It was a game of chances for both sides, with Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi – winning his 100th cap – testing Bart Verbruggen, and Micky van de Ven went close from distance for the Netherlands.

Morocco dominated after the break with Hakimi rattling the bar but were undone by a swift Dutch break with Gakpo firing home and mobbed by his team-mates.

That looked to be enough until the opening seconds of added time when Diop headed home a curling cross from Chemsdine Taldi.

Verbruggen then made one of the saves of the tournament to deny Morocco substitute Soufiane Rahimi as he cut his way through at the start of the added period.

There was no way either side was going to stop the game being decided on penalties and Teun Koopmeiners gave the Netherlands the lead before El Aynaoui thumped against the crossbar.

But Justin Kluivert hit the post before Rahimi’s penalty squirmed under the hands of Verbruggen for 1-1.

Wout Weghorst put the Dutch ahead into the top corner and Talbi went the other way but Quinten Timber shot wide with a tame effort.

Hakimi did not get him to pay as he smashed into the base of the same upright as Kluivert but Crysencio Summerville was denied by a firm hand from Yassine Bounou, shifting to his right before the kick was taken.

Saibari sent Verbruggen the wrong way and located the bottom corner to break Dutch hearts, per BBC.
