With a €6M release clause and a squad in desperate need of discipline – following the shock Valverde-Tchouameni brawl – is Mourinho the only man who can save Los Blancos? Yankee Scores has the exclusive details on the Bernabéu’s new era.

Real Madrid are in final talks to bring back Jose Mourinho to the Bernabeu as head coach.

Real Madrid are trophyless for the second consecutive time, losing to their biggest rivals on both occasions. The locker room vibe has also shown that the La Liga giants are in dire need of an elite manager who can manage the egos of the players.

The Return of the Special One

After his first spell at the Bernabeu 13 years, talks are ongoing regarding his appointment as manager.

The Portuguese tactician is now the preferred choice – and it can be confirmed by Yankee Scores that talks have started between Real Madrid and Mourinho’s agent.

The 63-year-old will succeed current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who only took charge in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure.

Florentino Perez, who is the president of the club, started evaluating the potential return of Jose Mourinho only a few days after Xabi Alonso left Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho has been coaching Benfica in his homeland Portugal since signing a two-year contract in September last year, and he stated to the press yesterday that he did not want to talk about his future.

“There’s a match against Estoril, and from Monday onwards I’ll be able to answer questions about my future as a coach and Benfica’s future,” he said.

This weekend, Benfica will face Estoril Praia, and it will be their last game of the season.

From Sunday onwards, Real Madrid can make a bargain for Mourinho, who costs a modest amount of money due to his release clause in his contract.

It states that he can exit Benfica if they pay them 3 million euros (£2.6m) within 10 days after the last game of the season.

Jose Mourinho worked for Real Madrid from 2010 until 2013 and won La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup.

Then, he returned to England and took the job at Chelsea, where he won the third of his three English Premier League titles and EFL Cup in 2014-15.

After being sacked from Chelsea, he took over Manchester United in July 2016 under a three-year contract.

Mourinho won Europa League, EFL Cup, and Community Shield in his debut season at Old Trafford. However, he lost his job in December 2018 following some terrible results.

Jose Mourinho has also coached Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahce teams during his career in Europe. In Serie A, he led Roma to win Europa Conference League last season.

A Season of Disastrous Failure

On the other hand, Real Madrid did not manage to bring home any trophy at the end of the 2025-26 season. They lost the La Liga competition to Barcelona, who won the El Clasico fixture against them 2-0 and now have a gap of 14 points from them.

Their Champions League journey ended after losing 6-4 on aggregate score against Bayern Munich in the quarter-final round.

Dressing Room Brawl

The club imposed a hefty fine of 1 million euros (£900,000) on two of their players for a dressing room fight.

Federico Valverde, who is 27 years old, suffered a concussion following the fight with his teammate and France international Aurelien Tchouameni, 26 years old.
