Houston Comets

Houston basketball fans may soon see a historic name return, as the Rockets’ owner pushes for a bold new chapter… Yankee Scores reports.

Fertitta Entertainment Strikes Deal

Tilman Fertitta’s company, Fertitta Entertainment, has officially entered into an agreement to purchase the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. Pending league approval, the franchise will relocate to Houston and revive the legendary Houston Comets name. Fertitta confirmed the plan, saying the team is expected to begin play at Toyota Center starting with the 2027 WNBA season.

A Historic Name Returns

The Comets were one of the WNBA’s original franchises, winning four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000. Their return would mark a revival of one of the league’s most iconic dynasties. Fertitta emphasized that Houston deserves to have the Comets back, noting the city’s deep basketball roots and passionate fan base.

What It Means for Houston

Bringing the Sun to Houston not only strengthens the Rockets’ brand but also re-establishes the city as a hub for women’s basketball. Fans who grew up watching Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson will see the Comets name shine again. Fertitta’s move signals a commitment to expanding Houston’s basketball legacy across both the NBA and WNBA.

Next Steps

The deal still requires WNBA approval, but excitement is already building. If finalized, the Comets will debut in 2027, giving Houston fans a chance to embrace both their Rockets and a reborn WNBA powerhouse.
