Paige Bueckers

After a big win, Paige Bueckers used her platform to highlight something she clearly feels strongly about, and it’s the number of black female head coaches in the league, Yankee Scores reports.

After the Wings’ win over the Chicago Sky on Sunday, the Wings star was asked about the process she would like to see in terms of hiring Black women into head coaching roles across the WNBA.

“I am for equal opportunity, no discrimination based on how you look, who you like and anything of that nature,” Bueckers said in a simple answer.

A Unique Touch

Bueckers didn’t just speak in generalities. She pointed to the women who had made up her life growing up.

According to ESPN, she said, “I had a lot of great black women in my life growing up that were very important to me in terms of how I was raised and how I grew up, being my stepmom, my AAU coach. I know how amazing they are, how they should have the same equal opportunity as a white woman, to be an important piece of this league.”

“The league itself owes a debt to Black women,” she said. “This league was built on a lot of Black women and so it’s definitely right for them to get the same equal opportunity as everybody else.”

The Numbers

Her comments come at a crucial moment. There are currently no Black women serving as head coaches anywhere in the WNBA. Seven of the league’s 15 head coaches are women, but none are Black.

The last black woman to hold one of those jobs was Noelle Quinn, who spent parts of five seasons running the Seattle Storm before the team decided not to renew her contract last year.

Bueckers is enjoying another solid season herself, averaging 20.7 points and 6.3 assists for the Wings, who have now won five straight games.
