Bayern Munich and England captain Harry Kane believes his historic 73 goals scored last season should be enough for him to emerge as the Ballon d’Or winner.
Kane has been identified as a favorite amid stiff competition from Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, and Rodri.
Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal recently talked up their chances of winning as well, and now Kane has broken his silence to declare himself as deserving.
In an interview with Marca,Kane said: “I’ve never liked to talk about myself too much. The only thing I would say is that last season was incredible, on a personal level and as a team. It was, by far, the best season of my life.
“It’s true that to finish on 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history, speaks for itself. I’m extremely proud of that. I can only thank my teammates and everyone who has helped me to make that possible.
“But the Ballon d’Or is not in my hands. It depends on the people that vote. From my point of view, last season is in the past. I’m now focused on this one and I’m eager to see what else I can achieve.
“I know that people are going to speak a lot about the Ballon d’Or until October, because it’s a big award.”
He continued by stating that the fact that this year’s Ballon d’Or award ceremony would be taking place in London could be a good omen. He is only one Golden Shoe award away from creating history.
If he tops the scoring charts for this season in the European leagues for the third time, then he will join the likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who won this award six and four times respectively.
“Messi and Ronaldo dominated football for a whole generation,” he said. “They are two of the best in history.
“To be part of that conversation is already special. It’s a goal.
“Being a striker, I’m expected to score goals. The Golden Boot is not my only goal but, of course, I know that, if I win it, I’ll also be helping the team. So all of that just motivates me.
“Every time I win one, I want another, then another, and this time will be no different. I hope to be there again this season, scoring as many goals as I can in the Bundesliga and we will see if I can get another.”
