Micah Parsons returns to practice as the Green Bay Packers prepare to welcome back their defensive superstar

The Green Bay Packers have found ways to remain defensively stoic without one of the NFL’s most dominant pass rushers. Now, with Micah Parsons returning from an ACL injury, the addition of the four-time All-Pro  to an already competitive defensive unit smells trouble for opposing offenses.

Micah Parsons returned to practice on Wednesday, November 4, for the first time since suffering a torn ACL and undergoing meniscus surgery in December 2025. However, his return was limited to individual drills.

The Packers on the other hand, have hardly been waiting helplessly for their star pass rusher.

Eight games into the new season, Green Bay has established itself as one of the league’s most productive units, ranking 10th in both points allowed per game (20.5) and total yards allowed (314.9). They have also recorded 15 takeaways, and 22 sacks, placed sixth in the league.

All of these numbers have come without Parsons, who was a key figure in Packers’ defensive plans following his arrival from Dallas last season.

A collective effort

The most impressive aspect of Green Bay’s defensive performance has been its ability to generate pressure through multiple players rather than a single dominant pass rusher.

The Packers have currently have 11 players with at least one full sack, the highest number of defensive contributors in the NFL.

Putting it into more perspective, In Week 8, Green Bay recorded six sacks in its 27-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, with Lukas Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Brenton Cox Jr, Ty’Ron Hopper and Devonte Wyatt each getting a sack.

Head coach Matt LaFleur commended the intensity of the defensive front.

“It was just the relentless pressure,” LaFleur said. “I thought our guys did a great job up front.”

That performance was a reflection of the influence of defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, whose approach has enhanced different players to contribute to the pass rush.

LaFleur, impressed with Gannon’s work described him as “savant”.

Gannon, however, was quick to redirect the praise towards his players.

“Wins and losses are the only stat I’m worried about, but, yeah, I think our guys have done a food job of taking the coaching and affecting the game in a positive way, executing the game plan as much as we can and we got some guys winning at a pretty good rate of one-on-ones right now. It’s about the players,” Gannon said.

He further emphasized the importance of adapting his scheme to the personnel available and the challenges presented by different opponents.

The missing piece returns

Regardless of how well the Packers have survived without Parsons with Gannon’s ingenuity, Parsons impact cannot be sidelined nor his return diminished.

Before his injury last season, the former Dallas Cowboys star recorded 12 sacks in his first campaign with Green Bay, earning another Pro Bowl and All selection despite missing the final three games.

With Parsons available, it creates additional opportunities for Van Ness, Sorrell and the rest of the Green Bay’s defensive front, with his elite one-on-one, he attracts double teams.

Gannon has admitted that the possibility of working with the pass rusher has been on his mind since Parsons’ arrival in Green Bay.

When asked how often he has thought about Parsons and his defensive plans, he said: “Every day.”

However, the Packers are unlikely to rush the elite pass rusher back into action.

Parsons acknowledged after Wednesday’s practice that his conditioning is not where it needs to be yet.

Micah Parsons dives deeper into his injury and why the recovery time was longer than the expected 9 months.

“I had a lot of damage done to my leg and it’s a miracle I’m even standing here today and that they opened my window this early…”

He has a 21-day practice window to be activated, with the Thanksgiving Eve matched up against the Los Angeles Rams on November 25 emerging as a possibility.

However, Head coach Matt LaFleur has cautioned against expecting an immediate return.

How dangerous can Green Bay become?

The Packers’ defensive performances have been nothing short of impressive, but with Parsons’ eventual return, that could take the unit to another level.

Green Bay has shown they can get results collectively. Its 15 takeaways are worth taking note of, considering the team managed just 14 throughout the entire 2025 regular season.

There is still room for improvement, particularly translating all of that defensive production to victories, a reason why some think they’ve only managed to survive without Parsons. Yankee scores reports.
