NFL free agency is set to officially begin later this week, but teams already have the green light to negotiate with players,Yankee Scores reports.

The legal tampering period opened today at noon ET, giving clubs a head start on shaping their rosters.

New rules for communication

For the first time, teams may conduct one video or phone call — lasting up to one hour — with as many as five free agents. In past years, communication was limited strictly to agents. This adjustment allows franchises to directly connect with players, adding a new dynamic to early negotiations.

What teams can do now

During this window, clubs can reach agreements in principle with unrestricted free agents. While contracts cannot be signed until the new league year begins on Wednesday, March 11 at 4 p.m. ET, many deals will be reported in advance. Extensions with current players and signings of released veterans can also be finalized outside this window.

Why timing matters

Negotiating early helps teams secure top talent before the frenzy of free agency. For players, it provides clarity on market value and potential landing spots. Insiders like Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Adam Schefter are already reporting agreements, signaling which franchises are moving aggressively.

What comes next

Once the new league year begins, all agreements made during the tampering period become official. Fans can expect a flood of announcements as teams unveil their new additions. With cap space and roster needs driving decisions, this week will shape the competitive balance of the 2026 season.
