The football world is in mourning after a shocking morning incident in Salzburg claimed the life of a Premier League cult hero; Yankee Scores reports.

Former Arsenal and Liverpool goalkeeper, Alex Manninger, has died at the age of 48 after a train hit his car; Yanke Scores reports.

Crossing Accident

According to the police, the event took place at a level crossing in Salzburg at around 08:20 local time (07:20 BST).

“Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch,” said Austrian Football Association sporting director Peter Schottel.

“His professionalism, composure and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team.

“His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable.”

Manninger’s Historic Arsenal Legacy

Manninger played for Arsenal 64 times from 1997 to 2002, winning the FA Cup and the Premier League.

He played for Austria 33 times and was on the team that played at Euro 2008 in his home country.

Manninger started his career with his hometown team, Red Bull Salzburg. He then played for 14 teams in Europe, including Sienna, Juventus, Udinese, and Augsburg.

He put pen to paper with Liverpool in 2016 when he was 39 years old, but he didn’t taste action.

Manninger was behind David Seaman in the pecking order while he was at Arsenal, but deputised for the injured England keeper late in the 1997–98 season.

That year, Manninger was instrumental in Arsenal’s win over West Ham in the sixth round of the FA Cup and had a great game against Manchester United at Old Trafford that fans will never forget.

In March 1998, Manninger was named the Premier League Player of the Month.
