The NFL is opening its 2026 campaign with fireworks. Fans will get a Super Bowl rematch right out of the gate as the Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots on Sept. 9, setting the tone for a season packed with prime‑time drama and international flair. Yankee Scores reports.
Banner Night in Seattle
Mike Macdonald’s Seahawks will raise their championship banner before facing Mike Vrabel’s Patriots in a Wednesday night opener. Seattle dominated New England 29‑13 in February to claim the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy. Now, the two teams meet again in Week 1, only the third time in league history that Super Bowl opponents have squared off immediately to start the following season.
History on the Line
Defending champions have gone 8‑3 in Super Bowl rematches the next year, and the NFL believes the matchup is a perfect draw. “We thought it was a fun way to start the season again with New England in Seattle, coming off that Super Bowl, certainly a ton to play for,” said NFL executive Hans Schroeder. The game will also mark just the second Wednesday opener in league history.
Vrabel’s Return
For the Patriots, the spotlight will shine on Vrabel’s sideline return after his offseason controversy. Quarterback Drake Maye leads a revamped roster into one of the toughest environments in football, aiming to flip the script against Sam Darnold and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker.
Season Highlights Ahead
The opener is just the beginning. Week 1 also features the 49ers and Rams in Melbourne, the Cowboys and Giants in Sunday night action, and the Broncos against the Chiefs on Monday night. Thanksgiving brings Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes, while Christmas week delivers a tripleheader capped by Rams–Seahawks. With nine international games and marquee matchups across the calendar, the 2026 season promises spectacle from start to finish.
