The Dallas Mavericks made headlines this week, and at the center of it all is team president Masai Ujiri. In a move that stunned fans and insiders alike, the Dallas Mavericks have parted ways with head coach Jason Kidd after five seasons. Yankee Scores reports.

Dallas Mavericks decided to move on from Jason Kidd, sources reported yesterday. The Hall of Famer point guard Kidd had four years and well over $40 million left on his Mavericks contract, sources said.

Speaking with reporters in Dallas, Ujiri emphasized accountability. “I have to be accountable with a decision like this,” he said. “I also have to be very active in how I look at the organization from top to bottom.”

The Mavericks had announced Kidd’s departure as a “mutual decision,” but Ujiri made it clear he owned the call. He described it as “very, very tough” given Kidd’s contributions, including guiding Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024.

During his introduction on May 5, Ujiri was asked about the future of Kidd, and he said he would have a conversation with Kidd and evaluate all aspects of the team.

A Clean Slate for the Mavericks

Ujiri, who only took over as president and governor two weeks ago, explained that the franchise needed a fresh start, a clean slate. He stressed the move was not connected to the controversial Luka Doncic trade in 2025, which brought Anthony Davis to Dallas but ultimately backfired.

“What he’s done for this organization we truly respect, so this was a very, very tough decision,” Ujiri reiterated, underscoring the respect Kidd still commands.

Kidd’s Legacy in Dallas

Jason Kidd, a Hall of Fame point guard and the leader of Dallas’ lone championship run in 2011, leaves with a .500 coaching record (205–205). His tenure included two deep playoff runs alongside Doncic, cementing his place in Mavericks history despite the recent struggles.
