In a blockbuster offseason move, the Los Angeles Lakers have hired Rohan Ramadas as an assistant general manager.
Ramadas is coming over from the New Orleans Pelicans, where he served as vice president of strategy and operations. His position with the Lakers will revolve around those same responsibilities.
“More on the strategy side,” Pelinka said of the job description he was looking to fill during exit interviews with reporters last week. “Cap, analytics and data.”
From Aerospace to Staples Center
Ramadas earned his degrees from the University of Southern California and worked for over a decade at the Aerospace Corporation before making the switch to the NBA.
“He’s a literal rocket scientist,” a source within the Pelicans organization told ESPN.
The AI and Analytics Boom
During his time with the Pelicans, Ramadas reportedly leveraged artificial intelligence and created models that helped out the organization.
According to sources from ESPN, the Lakers have been interviewing candidates in attempts to add strength to their front office, which includes multiple in-person interviews in Chicago during the league’s predraft camp.
“We’re looking to hire another assistant general manager who’ll be handling our player draft and evaluation processes,” Pelinka told ESPN.
“This includes pro scouting, draft scouting, and player development.”
The Dodger Blueprint Synergy
Pelinka highlighted how the Lakers, who were 50-win teams for two consecutive seasons now, would look to make use of resources available through the new owner Mark Walter in the summer.
This includes enhancing their brother-sister relationship with the Dodgers, who were acquired by Mark Walter.
