The France vs Senegal FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I clash at MetLife Stadium, delivered early drama when Sadio Mane appeared to trip Kylian Mbappe inside the danger area, sparking a lengthy VAR review.

The controversial moment came around the 59-60 minute mark as France pushed for an opener. Mbappe drove into the box and went down under a challenge from Senegal legend Mane. On-field referee Alireza Faghani waved play on, but VAR intervened, sending him to the pitch-side monitor for a detailed check.

After reviewing multiple angles, the referee upheld the no-penalty call. Officials determined that Mbappe had initiated the contact, with Mane’s trailing leg clip deemed insufficient for a spot-kick under the “clear and obvious error” threshold required for VAR to overturn on-field decisions. Replays showed minimal contact — a feather-light touch rather than a reckless trip — though many observers argued it was enough to unbalance the France captain.

WHAT A GOAL FROM MBAPPE TO GIVE FRANCE THE LEAD 🇫🇷

The decision immediately sparked frenzy on social media and in the stands. Some viewed it as a “stonewall penalty” and accused VAR of inconsistency, while others praised the referee for resisting pressure and avoiding a soft award. France fans felt robbed of a golden chance, while Senegal supporters celebrated a massive let-off for their defense, led by the experienced Edouard Mendy.

This moment highlighted ongoing debates about VAR’s role in high-stakes games. While technology aims for fairness, subjective calls in the box — especially involving star players like Mbappe and Mane — often divide opinions. Contact existed, but the referee’s judgment that Mbappe’s movement created the collision proved decisive, per The Guardian.

France eventually broke the deadlock later (with Mbappe involved in the build-up), but the non-penalty call has continued to dominate post-match discussion.

@AMSMayowa wrote on X:
“The ref in the France vs Senegal game was horrible in the first half, but his decision not to give the Mane challenge on Mbappe as a penalty is a great decision. Not every challenge in the box is a penalty and all the referees in the world has to learn.”
qasimirfan16 added:
“That should have been a penalty for France because Mane is clearly stopping Mbappe from scoring and fouls him there’s a clear contact made and in the Premier League or Champions League that’s a pen.”
@UniqoStarz suggested:
“Good call by the ref by not giving the penalty to France even tho the VAR thought otherwise! Sign of integrity and self confidence! And the touch of Mane into Mbappe was not the cause for the fall in the box.”

Tunisia appoint new coach

Yankee Scores earlier reported that Herve Renard has been appointed as the new coach for Tunisia during the remainder of their World Cup campaign, Yankee Scores reports.This is in line with the decision to sack Lamouchi following disputes and unrests in the team’s dressing room after their 5-1 loss to Sweden.
