Cape Verde made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time following a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia, Yankee Scores reports.

The Green Falcons end Group H in third place with three points from three draws, progressing to the Round of 32 after a 0-0 tie with the Blue Sharks.

It was a result that said much about the circumstances. Spain’s 1-0 triumph against Uruguay in the simultaneous fixture secured Cape Verde’s destiny in the most comfortable way possible, leaving the African debutants with the simple task of avoiding defeat.

Cape Verde is the third-smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup.

Against all odds, in their tournament debut, they’ve become the SMALLEST nation to ever qualify for the knockout rounds.

The game itself was a cagey, cautious affair with neither side eager to commit fully upfront. Saudi Arabia began the brighter of the two teams with Salem Al-Dawsari getting close early but Kevin Pina made a critical block to deny the Green Falcons.

But as the half wore on Cape Verde surged into the contest, with Willy Semedo and Mendes causing issues on the wide areas and straining the Saudi defenders.

Cape Verde were the more threatening side after the break, Pina trying a curling effort from afar and Deroy Duarte testing his luck from approximately 25 yards, neither testing the goalkeeper.

The Blue Sharks had to endure a violent battle with both teams collecting yellow cards throughout the course of the evening in Houston, including Saudi Arabia’s Nasser Al-Dawsari.

Per ESPN, Cape Verde had been pencilled in as prospective victims for Saudi Arabia in the group final coming into the tournament. Instead they are unbeaten in the group stages, having held Spain and Uruguay before earning qualification tonight.

It is a fairytale run for a country making its debut on football’s grandest stage and the story is far from finished.
