France will attempt to extend their strong run at the World Cup when they meet Sweden in the round of 32 at New York New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday with kickoff is slated for 5pm ET.

Les Bleus have been one of the best teams of the tournament so far.

They won all three of their group games to top Group I – one of just three teams to do so – with victories against Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0, before hammering Norway 4-1 in their last group match.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is joint top scorer in the competition with four goals alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele who netted a hat-trick in that victory over Norway.

Sweden, on the other hand, have demonstrated they can score goals but have had problems at the back.

They come into the knockout stage having conceded seven goals in the group stage, a run bookended by a crushing 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands, a 5-1 triumph over Tunisia and a 1-1 draw with Japan.

Victor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak provide Sweden a keen attacking edge but their backline has been exposed against better opposition and they will be without defender Isak Hien for the rest of the tournament after a hamstring injury picked up against Japan.

France’s Head-to-Head Edge

France have a good record in this fixture, winning 12 of the 23 previous meetings between the two nations, while Sweden have won six with five ending in draw.

They last met in the Nations League in November 2020, a six-goal thriller in Paris, which France won 4-2.

Today’s victor will advance to play either Paraguay in the Round of 16 with a possible quarterfinal berth in New England on the line, per World Soccer Talk

With Mbappe and Dembele on fire, France will be expected to try for a third straight knockout-stage progression as the World Cup gets deeper into the business end.
