Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has slammed referees for disallowing Jonathan Tah’s goal, which would have made the absolute difference against Paraguay, Yankee Scores reports.
The Core Controversy
Germany thought they had taken the lead in the 102nd minute through Jonathan Tah’s towering header from a corner kick. However, after a lengthy review by the VAR, the goal was overturned due to Waldemar Anton’s foul on Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
The disallowed goal has generated scathing criticism in some quarters. Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp believes that the contact Walderman Anton had with the Paraguayan goalkeeper in the build-up was not enough for VAR review. He further claimed that if such goals were disallowed in the English Premier League, then Arsenal would not have been champions.

“If that’s a disallowed goal, then Arsenal wouldn’t be English champions. They scored 60% of their goals like that.”

Pundits & Analysts Weigh In
Patrick Ittrich a referee analyst for MagentaTV also added his voice and argued that VAR should not have intervened because the foul was not an omission of the referee.
“For me that is not a clear and obvious error by the referee” Ittrich stated
“For me that’s too pedantic. I don’t see any pushing or shoving” he noted.
Likewise, Thorsten Kinhofer a referee analyst for the ZDF network did not hide his feelings.
“We’ve seen far worse situations at this World Cup and the goalkeeper gets straight back up. That’s a normal contact and never a foul” Kinhofer sentenced.
The disallowed goal proved costly for Germany as they lost 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay.
Paraguay will hope to surpass their quarter-final feat at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
