Egypt’s World Cup dream is over, but the continent is celebrating that wonderful run from the Pharaohs

Egypt lost 3-2 in the Round of 16 to Argentina in Atlanta, Yasser Ibrahim headed one in and Mostafa Zico finished another to put Egypt 2-0 up with just over ten minutes to play, but the defending champions fought back with goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi before Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time winner.
Egypt’s tournament is over, but not before they gave Argentina a scare on the world stage.

The Confederation of African Football did not dwell on the scoreline. In a short but emotional post on X CAF wrote, “History has already been written, Pharaohs. Thank you for everything.”

CAF’s tribute is a reflection of Egypt’s journey in this tournament. The Pharaohs were back at the World Cup for the first time since 2018 and made it their best yet, topping their group undefeated, beating Australia on penalties to reach the knockout stage for the first time and then taking the reigning champions to the wire.
Mohamed Salah was always there in front of goal and head coach Hossam Hassan guided a team largely built on Egyptian home-grown talent into uncharted territory.
