Scotland’s Eilish McColgan will not have the opportunity to retain her Commonwealth Games 10,000m title in front of her home crowd due to insufficient recovery from a foot fracture, Yankee Scores reports.
McColgan, 35, replicated her mother Liz’s performance in winning gold in the Games of last time held in Birmingham.
The injury-ridden period which followed saw her switch her focus from track to road racing. But she decided to come back to track in order to compete in her second Games in Glasgow after taking part in the steeplechase in 2014.
Unfortunately, suffering from an awful injury in her toe in the London Marathon this April resulted in a stress fracture, per BBC Sport.
Her team had been optimistic about her fitness to race on Monday at Scotstoun.
“Sadly, I won’t be competing at Glasgow 2026,” she said in a statement. “After almost 10 weeks out, it probably won’t come as a huge surprise.
“The good news is I’m back running. The bad news is I’ve simply run out of time to get myself, and my toe, back into spikes.
“Having started the year stronger than ever, I know the fitness is there but having only taken my first run outdoors a couple of weeks ago, the clock was always against me.
“I’ll be in Glasgow all week cheering on Team Scotland and wish everyone on the team the best of luck at the Games.”
