The New York Knicks are doing their part to keep their championship core together early on. Veteran guard Landry Shamet is expected to sign a four-year, $24 million deal to return to New York, Yankee Scores reports.

The deal was done Monday, ahead of free agency opening Wednesday, July 1.

Loyalty or Money

This one has significance. SNY’s Ian Begley reports Shamet rejected larger offers from other suitors to remain with the defending NBA champions.

His agent, George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group, negotiated directly with Knicks executives to secure the long-term commitment before rival teams could make their pitch. President Leon Rose had an easy call in getting Shamet back.

A Playoff Hero Comes Back

Shamet’s value soared during New York’s championship run. The 29-year-old averaged 9.3 points per game shooting 39.2 percent from three during the regular season. He elevated his game in the playoffs, shooting a blistering 47.5 percent from three-point range in 19 playoff games.

He was especially lethal in the Eastern Conference Finals sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers, knocking down 11-of-12 from three in the series. He then scored 13 points in Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks broke a 53-year championship drought, and Shamet was an important piece of that puzzle.

Implications for New York

The deal keeps the Knicks below the NBA’s second apron, a financial line the owner James Dolan had previously said the team must stay under. With Shamet signed as the 11th player under contract, New York can turn its attention to other roster decisions, including the future of center Mitchell Robinson.

Shamet has an incredible story. From an Exhibit 9 deal to a four-year NBA contract on a title team. He’s a big part of what the Knicks are putting together.
