NBA Draft lottery

The NBA Draft Lottery arrives Sunday, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. With tanking teams hoping for redemption and contenders like Oklahoma City lurking with a chance to add even more firepower, the ping‑pong balls could dramatically reshape the league’s future. Yankee Scores reports.

The Washington Wizards will emerge with a top-five pick in this year’s NBA draft. Utah Jazz and Brooklyn Nets might also get good spots in the draft, after putting up their least competitive seasons in their history.

The Favorites and the Odds

Washington, Brooklyn, and Indiana enter with the best odds at 14% each to land the No. 1 pick. The Wizards, who went 3‑26 after the All‑Star break, are guaranteed a top‑five selection. Brooklyn endured its worst season in franchise history, while Utah finished with a historically poor point differential, ensuring they’ll keep a top‑eight pick. Sacramento and Utah follow with 11.5% odds, while Atlanta, Memphis, and Dallas round out the next tier.

The OKC Wild Card

The most intriguing twist involves the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Thanks to the trade that brought Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander to OKC, the Clippers’ lottery slot could convey to the Thunder. If that pick lands at No. 1, the league’s balance of power could tilt even further toward Oklahoma City.

As Clippers executive Lawrence Frank put it, “Call it a coin‑flip chance of getting a high, high lottery pick in a loaded draft.”

Top Prospects Await

BYU star AJ Dybantsa, Kansas standout Darryn Peterson, and Duke’s Cameron Boozer headline the draft class. Their order will be determined Sunday, with franchises hoping to secure a cornerstone talent.

As Dybantsa said, “June 23rd, I’ll know where I’m at.” For him and others, the lottery will provide clarity.

Change Is Coming

This year’s lottery will be the last under the current format. The NBA Board of Governors is expected to ratify new rules designed to discourage tanking, after a season where five teams posted winning percentages below .180 following the All‑Star break. Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged the issue, saying the system’s incentives are “backwards” and in need of reform.
