What’s Next For King James?

LeBron James is a free agent and the NBA world is trying to figure out where the 41-year-old lands for his 24th season.

James told the Lakers on Tuesday he intends to continue playing but will not return to Los Angeles.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss responded in a statement thanking James for his eight years with the organization, including the 2020 championship run.

James’ decision, according to Rich Paul, was about a quest for what he called genuine happiness, not money.

Paul also said that James’ chances of remaining with the Lakers had been about 80 percent until he ultimately decided to move on.

Warriors emerge as front-runners

The Golden State Warriors have emerged as the presumptive favorite.

Draymond Green opted out of his $27.7M player option, which could’ve opened up cap flexibility for Golden State to make a run at James on a lesser deal, potentially via the non-taxpayer midlevel exception.

There is also talk of a possible move by Anthony Davis that would reunite James with his former teammate on the Lakers in the Bay Area.

But Washington hasn’t showed any interest in letting Davis go

Additional Suitors in the Mix

James’ first team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, remain in the mix. So do the Miami Heat, who just added Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Even the Philadelphia 76ers, who stunned everyone with their deal for Jaylen Brown, have reportedly showed interest

Another rumour going around is that the Minnesota Timberwolves are also monitoring the situation

James’s Recent Form

James is coming off a sciatica-shortened season that restricted him to 60 games and ended his 21-year All-NBA streak.

Still, he did make his annual All-Star appearance and picked up his elite performance in the playoffs, averaging 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds in more than 38 minutes a night.

What It Means For Lakers

James leaving leaves the Lakers with almost 52 million dollars in cap space, per NBA Salary Cap Analyst Yossi Gozlan

They lost no time in deploying part of it by acquiring center Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with Utah for a four-year, 130 million dollar contract.

They are looking to add more frontcourt help as well, including free agent Jalen Duren and Sandro Mamukelashvili.

What’s Next

James is not in a rush to decide. While some of the best free agents have already agreed to deals elsewhere, James is taking his time, along with James Harden and Draymond Green.

Official signing of contract begins July 6 but wherever he lands will be a really surprising sight.

James’ identity for the last eight seasons has been purple and gold. But at 41, with a chance to make an unprecedented 24th season, LeBron James seems ready for yet another new beginning.
