Ja Morant flashed a peace sign in the Grizzlies’ loss to Cleveland, but the gesture may have hinted at something bigger than frustration. Could Memphis’ franchise star be preparing for life outside Tennessee? Yankee Scores reports.

Morant’s Impact in Memphis

Since entering the league in 2019, Morant has been the heartbeat of the Grizzlies. He’s averaged 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game across his career, with a career shooting line of 46.6% from the field, 31.1% from three, and 77.3% from the free-throw line. His explosiveness and playmaking have redefined Memphis basketball, even if he isn’t the all-time franchise leader in threes or points per game.

Contract Situation

Morant is currently in year three of his five-year, $197.2 million designated rookie extension, signed in 2022. He is under contract through the 2027–28 season, earning $39.4 million this year and escalating to $44.8 million in the final year. This deal locks him in as Memphis’ centerpiece, but it also makes any potential trade a massive financial and strategic decision.

The Grizzlies Without Him

If Morant were to leave, Memphis would lose not only their leading scorer but also the identity of their offense. His ability to collapse defenses and ignite fast breaks has been the cornerstone of their style. Without him, the Grizzlies risk sliding into a full rebuild, especially given their recent struggles.

Possible Destinations

Despite speculation, no team has made Morant a trade priority. While franchises like the  Chicago Bulls (desperate for a franchise guard) could theoretically explore options, front offices remain cautious. His contract size, injury history, and off-court issues make him a complicated acquisition.

Final Thoughts

Morant’s peace sign may have been nothing more than a fleeting gesture, but it has fueled conversations about his future. If he does leave Memphis, the ripple effect would be seismic, for the Grizzlies, their fans, and the league itself. Yet, as of now, his contract and the lack of suitors suggest he’ll remain in Memphis, at least until the narrative shifts.
