Bengals Land Jonathan Allen in Major Defensive Shake-Up

Jonathan Allen with the Minnesota Vikings

Cincinnati Bengals have made another bold move in free agency, and it’s one that could reshape their defensive identity… YankeeSports reports

Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has agreed to a two-year, $26 million contract with the Bengals, according to Sources. The deal could rise to $28 million through incentives.

Allen, 31, became available after being released by the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday, a cap casualty at the start of the 2026 league year. His arrival marks the second major addition to Cincinnati’s defensive front this offseason.

Bengals’ Defensive Overhaul

Earlier this week, the Bengals secured former Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Boye Mafe on a three-year, $60 million deal. Together with Allen, these signings highlight Cincinnati’s determination to rebuild a unit that struggled last season, particularly in generating pressure.

The Bengals lost edge rushers Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai in free agency, leaving significant gaps. By investing heavily in Allen and Mafe, the team is signaling a clear intent to remain competitive in the AFC North.

Salary Impact

At $13 million annually (excluding incentives), Allen becomes one of the highest-paid defenders on the roster. He ranks just behind Mafe and new safety Bryan Cook, who earns $13.4 million per year, according to OverTheCap.com.

This financial commitment underscores the Bengals’ strategy of prioritizing proven talent over depth, aiming to stabilize a defense that faltered in 2025.

Allen’s Track Record

Allen signed with Minnesota in March 2025, earning $16.2 million in his lone season there. He played all 17 games, recording 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

A first-round pick (No. 17 overall) by Washington in 2017, Allen spent seven seasons with the Commanders. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2022, combining for 16.5 sacks across those campaigns. In total, he logged 42 sacks in 108 starts during his Washington tenure.

What It Means for Cincinnati

With Allen anchoring the interior and Mafe rushing off the edge, Cincinnati’s defensive line suddenly looks formidable again. The Bengals are betting that this revamped unit can deliver the consistency they lacked last season.

The question now is whether these high-profile signings will translate into playoff success—or if the Bengals’ gamble on veteran talent will fall short.
