Experienced quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has completed a move to a new club just hours after leaving the Miami Dolphins.

YankeeScores reported that the Dolphins released Tagovailoa early Monday morning after informing him of the decision.

The move leaves Miami with an NFL-record $99 million in dead money. His release also allows the Dolphins to spread the financial hit across two years.

Falcons Move Quickly for a Quarterback

Tagovailoa has now completed a deal to join the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources.

The Falcons entered the market searching for a quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. is currently recovering from a knee injury, and the team plans to release Kirk Cousins before the start of the new league year.

Penix started most games for the Falcons last season. However, he tore his ACL in Week 11.

His return date remains uncertain, although he recently told reporters he expects to be ready for the opening week.

Tagovailoa’s arrival now gives Atlanta an immediate option at quarterback. He brings significant experience in the National Football League.

Tagovailoa’s Career Numbers

In 2021, Tagovailoa threw for 2,653 yards and 16 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions.

In 2022, he recorded 3,548 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. However, injuries forced him to miss four games.

In 2023, Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards with 4,624. He also set a career high with 29 touchdown passes while playing all 18 of Miami’s games. That season earned him a contract extension that made him the highest-paid player in franchise history.

In 2024, he led the league in completion percentage. However, he missed six games due to a concussion and a late-season hip injury.

Although his performances were inconsistent in 2025, he still threw a career-high 15 interceptions.

Financial Impact on the Dolphins

Tagovailoa’s departure will cost the Dolphins $99.2 million in dead money against the salary cap, an NFL record.

The team also still owes him $54 million in guaranteed money in 2026. However, that amount will be reduced by any salary he earns with another team.
