Controversy in the capital! A 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano has left the football world talking. Can the Gunners finish the job at the Emirates? Yankee Scores has the full breakdown.
Atletico Madrid and Arsenal shared the spoils at Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg of the 2025/2026 Uefa Champions League semifinal.
A penalty apiece in each half ensured both sides leave a lot to desire at North London next week.
The VAR Flashpoint
Gunners are disappointed that the center referee controversially overruled a penalty decision after Eberechi Eze went down following a challenge by David Hancko in the 78th minute. The referee concluded Eze made the most of Hancko tackle after VAR intervention.
The Battle of the Talismen
Arsenal leading scorer this season, Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead from the spot following Hancko’s clumsy challenge on him. However, Atletico Madrid responded in a similar fashion through Julian Alvarez after Ben White’s handball.
Arsenal are aiming to reach the Champions League final for only the second time in their history.
Woodwork and Missed Chances
The Gunners had it better in the first half but faced a much-improved Atletico in the other half.
Atleti did create a handful of chances. First, Alvarez;s freekick went agonizingly wide, Griezmann hit the crossbar and Ademola Lookman shot directly at Raya from a clear position at goal.
Tactical Shifts
Alvarez was substituted after showing some injury signs. Instantly, Arsenal regained the control of the game and were nearly rewarded when Eze went down from Hancko’s challenge. After another VAR intervention, the referee overrules the penalty decision, which was greeted with a roar of relief from the Atletico fans.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to this weekend league action against Fulham, while Atleti face Valencia before the deciding leg at the Emirates.
