Barcelona will not relent in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez, as the January transfer window offers another opportunity to snatch him from Atlético Madrid.
Despite Atlético’s insistence that the forward will not be sold to their La Liga rivals, the Catalan board is far from giving up.
Atlético had accused Barcelona of running a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” over their pursuit of the player, even going as far as to post parody images of Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha in Atlético shirts.
On August 27th, Atletico reiterated their position again: “Unanimous backing from the Board of Directors for the club’s strategy. The transfer of Julián Alvarez to FC Barcelona will not be negotiated”.
The January Window Opportunity
However, Alvarez’s stance of Barcelona or nothing continues to give Barcelona some glimmer of hope.
According to Sport, the transfer of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal to Barcelona does not in anyway erase their interest in Alvarez, as the Spanish club still has somewhere between €65 million to €70 million to spend in January.
”The Argentine will continue to be the priority objective of the sporting management to strengthen the [Barcelona] project before the summer of 2027 when, due to the return to Montjuic [to be their temporary home], it is expected that the club will not have the fair play to undertake the operation,” the report states.
Hansi Flick has some time on his hands now to rethink his plans and identify any areas where he may need to bolster his team.
It would appear that all doors are still open for Alvarez, despite Arsenal’s lack of success this summer in signing him.
We’ll just have to wait and see whether Arsenal will be making a move once more.
