England will assess Declan Rice’s fitness in the next few days ahead of the World Cup semi-final against Argentina, Yankee Scores reports.

But there’s optimism the Arsenal midfielder can shake off the ill effects to play on Wednesday.

Rice, who had been struggling with a sickness bug in the build-up to Saturday’s quarter-final win over Norway in Miami, was substituted at the break.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted afterwards he spent three days in bed before the match which England won 2-1 after extra time.

It is understood Rice has not fully recovered from the illness – contracted in Mexico where England defeated the co-hosts 3-2 in the last 16 – but his condition has improved significantly over the past 48 hours.

As it stands, hope is growing he will be fit enough to start in Atlanta, per BBC Sport.

Given the occasion, Rice is almost certain to declare himself fit for the semi-final.

But with the illness serious, England medics will take a late call on his availability.

Tuchel will wait to see how quickly his condition improves before deciding definitively whether to pick him.

Rice has been struggling with a neural problem for a number of months that has affected his lower back and hamstring and his recovery from the illness bug.

The 78-cap midfielder has started all but one of England’s World Cup matches to date, missing the 2-0 group stage win over Panama when he suffered a recurrence of an injury.
