World Cup Fans

Fifa has been warned that not allowing water bottles could put fan health at risk during this summer’s World Cup, Yankee Scores reports…

Reusable water bottles won’t be permitted in World Cup stadiums due to safety issues.

A Sudden U-Turn

Initially, the stadium code of conduct allowed empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles up to one liter.

However, just seven days before the tournament starts on June 11, there’s been a change.

Now, bottles along with cups and cans are banned. This is intended to cut down on the risk of injuries from thrown items.

“Fifa is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff,” football’s world governing body said in a statement.

Inside the stadium, fans can purchase water, and FIFA won’t jack up their usual prices.

The Perilous Heat Factor

But heat specialists aren’t happy about that decision. One expert states the ban makes it way riskier for folks to have heat-related issues.

Back in May, scientists sounded an alarm, claiming FIFA’s plans to handle the heat were lacking. They expect temps at 14 out of the 16 sites to reach perilous levels.

“Fifa works closely with each host city committee and local authorities on heat mitigation factors for fans travelling to the stadium, which can include resources such as misting stations, fans, hydration stations, cooling tents and more around the stadium footprint,” Fifa’s statement said.

“Inside the stadium footprint, pricing for water bottles for the Fifa World Cup 2026 will remain consistent with other events held at each stadium.”

The policy change follows complaints about “extortionate” ticket prices and train fares. Fans couldn’t bring bottles into stadiums at the last World Cup in Qatar either.

Three Lions England Fans’ Group Champions a Reversal

The Free Lions England fans’ group calls this a “strange, late change.”

In a post on X, they added, “Free water in stadiums was a key issue in all our talks. FIFA said it would happen, but then fans could only bring their own water bottle.”

“Naturally, the immediate thought from supporters is this is just the latest money-grab. For how hot the stadiums will be, many in open air, just let fans bring a bottle if they want to.

“We hope the water fountains in stadiums will still be free, hopefully you aren’t charged in the queue!”
