German football association is set to open talks with Jürgen Klopp over the vacant coaching role of the German national team following Julian Nagelsmann’s exit, Yankee Scores reports.

On Thursday, Nagelsmann requested to be let go after the team’s early exit from the World Cup.

The German FA (DFB) have now taken up that demand and cancelled their contract with the 38-year-old ex-Bayern Munich boss with immediate effect, per BBC Sport.

In a statement DFB said it “will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp”, adding: “He has already indicated his general willingness to take on the position.

Germany’s World Cup campaign ended on Monday after the four-time winners lost to Paraguay on penalties in the last 32.

Nagelsmann, who was appointed in 2023, initially was keen to stay in charge, telling reporters after the game: “I’m not someone who runs away.

But he said in a statement on Friday: “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have sought counsel from people I trust, both personally and within the federation.

“The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team ‘s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.”

It was Nagelsmann’s second major tournament, with Germany reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals as hosts before losing in extra time to eventual winners Spain.

Germany have not won a World Cup knockout match since they were crowned champions in 2014. They were unable to progress beyond the group stages in 2018 and 2022 under Joachim Low and Hansi Flick respectively.

Nagelsmann, who has also managed German club sides RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim, replaced Flick in September 2023 on a deal until after Euro 2024. Then it was extended to this year’s World Cup, then to Euro 2028.

Klopp Unhappy with Germany Early Exit

The Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has slammed referees for disallowing Jonathan Tah’s goal, which would have made the absolute difference against Paraguay.

Germany thought they had taken the lead in the 102nd minute through Jonathan Tah’s towering header from a corner kick. However, after a lengthy review by the VAR, the goal was overturned due to Waldemar Anton’s foul on Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The disallowed goal has generated scathing criticism in some quarters. Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp believes that the contact Walderman Anton had with the Paraguayan goalkeeper in the build-up was not enough for VAR review. He further claimed that if such goals were disallowed in the English Premier League, then Arsenal would not have been champions.
