Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe believes he has a bright chance of winning the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career this year.
This 27-year-old netted 42 goals in 44 matches in the previous season in which his team failed to win any trophy.
He scored 10 goals in the last World Cup match and he has scored a total of 22 goals in the World Cup matches in his career.
Kylian Mbappé talked his chances during a pre-match press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan
“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” he said.
“There are many people that speak about me and the Ballon d’Or. Of course I’ve made history in the most important competition. Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”
He added: “I always think I’m the best [player in the world] but everyone has their own opinion.
“Maybe people think different ways. I don’t think it’s a discussion we need to have.
“Of course this year could be good for me to win the Ballon d’Or. But journalists vote.”
The highest place Mbappe has achieved in the Ballon d’Or is third in 2023, when he was a PSG player.
Three players have been given shorter odds with the bookmakers to win the Ballon d’Or, which will be handed out on 26 October.
England captain Harry Kane is a favorite to win, having netted 61 goals in 51 matches for Bundesliga double champions Bayern Munich last season. He also scored six times during the World Cup.
Lamine Yamal, who won La Liga with Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain, is second favorite – followed by his teammate Rodri, formerly of Manchester City.
