Argentina star Lionel Messi has decided to retire from international football and said the decision was one that “hurts” him, but he realizes “it’s time.”
The Inter Miami forward had hinted at his eventual retirement after he paid an emotional tribute following the death of his father.
He captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and to the 2026 World Cup final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Spain, before returning to club side Inter Miami.
In a statement on Instagram, Messi penned an emotional message in Spanish, emphasizing that he has nothing left in the tank to give to the national team.

“It was a decision that hurt and hurts in my soul, but I understand that it is the right time.
I swear to you that I always gave everything—not just in recent years when we won everything, but before as well—and I always fought and gave my all for this shirt, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”
Messi believes his exit from the national team will pave the way for younger players to prove their mettle.
“I’ve given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance.”
