Nashville Stun Inter Miami in Champions Cup

Lionel Messi reached another historic landmark in Fort Lauderdale, but it wasn’t enough to keep Inter Miami alive in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Yankee Scores reports.

Messi Hits 900, But Miami Fall Short

Messi opened the scoring in the seventh minute, netting the 900th goal of his career with a trademark left-foot strike. The Argentinian star turned brilliantly under pressure, threading the ball through traffic and past goalkeeper Brian Schwake. It was a moment of pure class, yet it proved to be Miami’s only breakthrough of the night.

Espinoza Delivers for Nashville

Cristian Espinoza equalised in the 74th minute, capitalising on a chaotic sequence in the box. After Alex Muyl’s shot ricocheted off Gonzalo Luján, goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair failed to clear decisively, leaving Espinoza with a simple finish. That away goal proved decisive, sending Nashville into the quarter-finals.

Coach B.J. Callaghan praised his side’s resilience, saying: “If you want to become an elite team and an elite club, you need to be able to perform in a prestigious tournament like this.”

Miami’s Exit and What’s Next

Inter Miami, the reigning MLS champions, were eliminated despite Messi’s milestone. Coach Javier Mascherano admitted: “Unfortunately, we conceded a goal following an unlucky play… and we’re out.”

The match was Miami’s last at Chase Stadium before moving to their new home near Miami International Airport. For Messi and his teammates, the night ended in frustration, with Nashville celebrating a famous result.

Nashville’s Spirit Shines

Despite missing a golden chance through Hany Mukhtar earlier, Nashville showed belief and fight. Callaghan summed it up: “We have a group with a lot of belief… a relentless spirit. Just really proud of the entire group.”
