An All-Italian Affair
Cobolli will play either Matteo Berrettini or Matteo Arnaldi in the semis. Even though top favorite Jannik Sinner surprisingly lost in the second round, an Italian spot in the finals is locked.
“I don’t care which Matteo is in the semi-finals. It’s been the best week of my life but I’m still missing something, so I have to fight again,” Cobolli said after his win.
Also, Cobolli will break into the top 10 on Monday if Jakub Mensik, who’s playing against Alexander Zverev, doesn’t win the tournament.
A Tale of Two Matches
In the windy conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier, both players began slow. But after getting going, Auger-Aliassime seized the opportunity at 5-4 to secure the first set. Once the roof closed, conditions improved.
Though Cobolli fell behind early in the second set, he fought back, winning four straight games to even the match.
“I think we played two different matches today. The first set was incredibly windy. It was really tough to play,” Cobolli said.
“I went to the toilet to think a bit. I tried to change something. I thought ‘this is the best court I’ve played on in my life, because I can show my best tennis’.
“I said to myself to fight, this is the chance of my life and I must give everything in all my matches. So today I’m really happy.”
The Top-10 Horizon
Cobolli snagged his semi-final spot after a grueling three hours and 24 minutes on court. He needed just one break in the third and fourth sets to get through.
With Auger-Aliassime’s exit, only Cobolli and second seed Zverev from the top 10 remain in the men’s draw.
