Jannik Sinner‘s year has ended the way it’s been going for months, on the sidelines. The world No. 1 confirmed on social media on Tuesday morning that his 2026 season is over because of injury.
His focus now is getting fit for 2027.
“Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner announced on Instagram. “The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, gave me so many beautiful feelings and emotions.
“This year is going to be way different. But at the moment I also need to think about my long-term career.
“I will do everything possible to get back to 100%. I thank you already in advance for you support, and hope to see you very, very soon on the court.”

Since he beat Alexander Zverev to defend his Wimbledon title in July, he hasn’t been out there. He’s pulled out of three ATP Masters 1000 events and the US Open. Shanghai, the second-last Masters of the year, went on Saturday, with no hint at the time that the season was finished.
He’s also out of the China Open, where he was the defending champion. Wimbledon was the high point. The back half of the year he spent watching from the sidelines.
The damage goes beyond missed events. Zverev, now No. 2 after winning the French Open and US Open, is on course to take the world No. 1 ranking for the first time before November’s ATP Finals. Carlos Alcaraz is the other man in that race. He has slipped to No. 3 while returning from the wrist injury that forced him out of the French Open and Wimbledon.
The ATP Finals is the tournament where Sinner is the defending champion. He won’t be there to defend it.
