World number one Jannik Sinner is set to miss the upcoming US Open after pulling out due to injury.
The 25-year-old player has not played since winning the Wimbledon title in July due to an injury on his knee.
Sinner’s withdrawal comes a day after his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz announced he will be competing at Flushing Meadows despite having been away from the game for four months due to a wrist injury.
Sinner has been dominant on the men’s tour in 2026 and comfortably sits on top of the world rankings in Alcaraz’s absence.
He claimed his fifth career Grand Slam singles title after defeating Alexander Zverev at the All-England Club, per BBC Sport.
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” said Sinner.
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart.”
The US Open victory of Sinner made him achieve his second Grand Slam title in 2024, while last year he also played in the final of New York tournament where he lost to Alcaraz.
They had a total sweep of Grand Slam tournaments in 2024 and 2025 with each having four major titles, thus dominating tennis in a duopoly that has become a generation battle.
But their rivalry could not reach such peaks as well.
The absence of Sinner from the last three Grand Slams because of Alcaraz’s wrist injury is due to the fact that they do not participate in the tournaments together for the last three times.
