Elina Svitolina has reclaimed her place among tennis’ elite. On Saturday in Rome, the Ukrainian star battled past Coco Gauff in a thrilling three‑set final to capture her third Italian Open crown and the 20th title of her career. Yankee Scores reports.
A Hard‑Fought Victory
Svitolina needed nearly three hours to prevail 6‑4, 6‑7 (3), 6‑2, sealing her first WTA 1000 trophy since 2018. The Ukrainian also won the title in 2017.
“It’s very hard to believe that it’s been eight years when I had this trophy here,” she said, reflecting on her journey. Her determination shone in the decider, where she broke Gauff twice and closed the match with a crisp volley at the net.
Gauff’s Struggles Continue in Rome
For Gauff, it was another painful runner‑up finish in the Eternal City. The third‑ranked American lost last year’s final to Jasmine Paolini and hoped to become the first U.S. player to win in Rome since 2016. “It’s been a great two weeks … and I definitely feel the momentum going into the French Open,” Gauff said, choosing to focus on the positives despite the setback.

Svitolina’s Milestone Moment
The seventh‑ranked Svitolina, who previously won in Rome in 2017 and 2018, now joins a select group of players with three Italian Open titles.
Coco Gauff started the game well, breaking Svitolina and holding her serve. Svitolina broke her chance to go a set up, as she fended off three break points to close the deficit of 5-2 and win the opening set.
Svitolina admitted she had set a personal goal with her coach to reach a “round number” of career trophies before retiring. Saturday’s triumph brings her closer to that dream.
